Abstract

The Naladiyar, one of the Patinenkilkanakku nulkal (Eighteen lesser works) in Tamil literature, holds a unique position next to the Thirukkural. The Naladiyar written by Jain sages, comprises 400 poems that expound on the virtues of charity and compassion. Similar to the Thirukkuṟal, the Naladiyar emphasizes the importance of charity and compassion. The concept of charity is also highlighted in Vemana’s poems in Telugu literature which contains 2500 songs and was translated by Charles Philip Brown in 1892. Vemana, a renowned Telugu poet, emphasizes the significance of helping others and considers it a fundamental human quality. This article aims to compare and contrast the concept of charity in the Naladiyar and Vemana’s poems, highlighting the similarities and differences between both of them.
